• George Henry White Day Speaker Presentations

  At the turn of the 20th Century, as black citizens became disenfranchised throughout the South, one sole voice stood against the tide: George Henry White. A lone voice in Congress, he called for legislation against lynching, he stood for universal voting rights, and for education for all children. When in 1900, the vote was taken from 98 percent of black North Carolinians, he penned his famous "Farewell to Congress," a riveting and often prophetic document quoted until today. He moved from politics into economic empowerment, building a bank, a land company, and a town where black people could own their own land, homes and businesses--Whitesboro, New Jersey. His example has inspired change makers to continue his work in law, education, and development. One century later, as America faces a similar challenge, Americans of all ethnicities respond to White's message, joining hands to build a strong and united nation.

On November 12, the Southern Historical Association offered me the opportunity to present a conference paper on the 1978 Rocky Mount (NC) Sanitation Workers Strike at its annual meeting in Baltimore, Maryland. My presentation was included on a panel entitled “Race, Rights and Southern Labor after 1965,” chaired by Robert Korstad of Duke University with commentary by Bryant Simon of Temple University. The Southern Labor Studies Association (SLSA) sponsored this panel within the SHA conference. My paper was based on the subject of my masters’ thesis.
