Homework For This Week

If you can get familiar with these materials before Thursday it will be easier to communicate and spend time talking about guitar technique specifically, which is what you really need me for.

  • *Most Important* - Learning How To Learn

    I really like this article, I've used the things it taught me when learning everything from Piano to Rock-Climbing.

  • Be able to read sheet music in two weeks.

    For us guitar players only the "treble clef" exercises are relevant. This is how young children learn to read music so quickly, instead of trying to practice the skill of reading music and playing an instrument, take some time to separate the skills and practice them in isolation. This will become super helpful for volume 1 of A Modern Guitar Method. I keep this PDF on my phone and look at exercises while riding the metro.

  • Introduction chord changes (Jordan Lovinger)

    This should be helpful to read before our first lesson. You just need to understand part 1 and part 2. I wrote this post and sold the rights to a company called "Uberchord", so technically I don't own the article. Please don't post it online.

  • The Best Book For Learning Guitar From Scratch

    No matter what your goals are you'll need this. It's less than 10 bucks, might as well get it now. This is the book you'd be handed at Berkley if you said you wanted to study guitar. If you think you'll have sporadic lessons or teach yourself mostly get the $20 package with the CD for the duets. I hated volume 2, so I wouldn't get the 3 pack...just found volume 2 to be a waste of time and not nearly as pretty pieces.

  • The JustinGuitar Beginners Guitar Course

    You can start learning your open chords here. Skip "Getting Started" and go straight to Stage 1. If you can get through the "D", "A" and "E" chords that's a great start. Remember - you can do things like alternate between these three chords while watching a TV show or reading a book in your music stand. The idea here is just to get your hands on the guitar as much as possible - do whatever you need to do to facilitate your hands physically being on the guitar.

  • How To Read Tab and Chord Boxes

    Sheet music is the academic way of writing music, it contains tones and rhythm. Tab is a simpler way of notating music but lacks rhythm (with an exception that is obnoxious) and only applies to guitar. It is a more common way of teaching music between guitarists. Ditto with chord boxes.

  • A Horse With No Name by America - Easy Guitar Songs for Beginners

    Horse With No Name is one of the easiest guitar songs for beginners to learn. We're going to teach you how to play it while throwing in some music theory.

  • Music Theory - Too Long Didn't Read

    This book will be helpful for you to reference throughout your study on guitar. While the blog post I wrote covers the composition of chords specifically this text (for electronic musicians) is much more comprehensive while not being archaic.

  • Picking Exercises

    So you can run scales but this video does a better job of giving you actual picking exercises that are applicable to improvising for real. I'd choose one exercise and just run it while watching TV or in the first two minutes when you pick up a guitar.

  • Shape of You - Ed Sheeran // Guitar Tutorial (Chords + Picking)

    I like this youtubers lessons specifically. She cuts down pop songs so it's more manageable for a beginner/intermediate.

  • Arpeggios & Scales

    Think of this like a dictionary. We can talk more about it on Thursday but you won't need it frequently.
