    Il 2019 è stato dichiarato dall'UNESCO "Anno Internazionale della Tavola Periodica", per celebrare il 150o anniversario dalla pubblicazione della Tavola degli Elementi da parte del chimico russo Dmitrij Mendeleev. Il 6 marzo 1869, infatti, Mendeleev presentò formalmente alla Società Russa di Chimica la sua classificazione degli elementi chimici, che intitolò: "La dipendenza tra le proprietà dei Pesi Atomici degli Elementi". Mendeleev non fu il primo in assoluto a proporre la classificazione degli elementi chimici. In quel periodo, infatti, erano già state pubblicate altre tavole in cui gli elementi chimici erano ordinati in base al numero atomico crescente o raggruppando gli elementi in categorie con proprietà chimiche simili. Uno dei tratti caratterizzanti del lavoro di Mendeleev consiste nel fatto che egli lasciò alcune caselle vuote, basandosi sulle proprietà periodiche che aveva identificato. Per esempio, ipotizzò l'esistenza di tre elementi, che nominò eka-silicio, eka-alluminio ed eka-boro, in quanto si trovano esattamente una casella sotto i rispettivi elementi già noti al tempo (si veda Figura 1). Questi elementi furono scoperti negli anni a venire (sono rispettivamente il germanio, il gallio e lo scandio).
