Nel volume "L'origine delle specie", Charles Darwin non parlava di alieni, ma se c’è vita su altri mondi sicuramente si è evoluta. Il problema è: come? Le leggi della fisica e della chimica sono valide sulla Terra come su altri pianeti, siamo sicuri che un corpo cada con una certa accelerazione di gravità e che due elementi chimici possano unirsi con legami particolari anche su corpi celesti che orbitano intorno a una stella aliena. Ma non abbiamo le stesse certezze per la biologia. Quali forme di vita potremmo trovare su altri pianeti? Obbediranno a leggi e regole che conosciamo, o la loro biologia sarà del tutto differente? Paul Nurse, premio Nobel per la Medicina nel 2001, non ha mai smesso di porsela, fin da quando era bambino.
