Global Health in a Changing World: People, Planet, and Technology

Conference scheduled for February 7-8, 2020 in East Village, Northeastern University Honoring Northeastern’s commitment to creating unobstructed, immersive opportunities for learning, NU Global Health in the Changing World seeks to build partnerships across disciplines with changemaker institutions. Our main theme (change) encompasses how people, the planet, and technology are changing through focusing plenary sessions on forced migration, climate change and emerging diseases, and emerging technologies. Please join us in working together to create an event that is informative, enriching, and inspiring. Our workshops are designed to be interactive, informative, and outcome-driven. Interactive, Outcome Driven Workshops

1. Pathways to a Career in Global Health

  • Description

    In a Changing World, it is important for students to have an understanding of different global and public health career options available to them. Join us for an interactive simulation where students will be assigned mentors and fake career personalities and be asked to debate a realistic public health crisis. Outcomes of this workshop will be students, speakers, and attendees participating and enrolling in a year-long mentor-mentee relationship program.

2. Emerging Diseases due to Climate Change

  • Description

    In a Changing World, we are already seeing the emergence and re-emergence of vector-borne diseases. Join us for conversations with key responders to the problem of emerging diseases in the United States. Attendees will have the opportunity to work on designing and brainstorming interventional programs with the opportunity to extend into a part-time project or co-op education opportunity.

3. Global Mental Health

  • Description

    In a Changing World, mental health is increasingly acknowledged as an important component of an individual’s overall health. Mental health delivery and outcomes are strongly influenced by population and societal characteristics. Researchers from leading Boston institutions will discuss considerations and methods of mental health delivery in different settings. Explore this growing field and learn about what mental health delivery looks like on the ground.

4. Intersection of Business, Investing, and Public Health

  • Description

    In a changing world, as economies shift and public health needs evolve, it is critical to understand how the flow of cash will affect health worldwide, and how we can this understanding to make sure the resultant changes are for the better. Gain a concrete understanding of how business and global health are fundamentally connected, and learn how to get involved in using business ideas to advance and sustain global health ventures.

5. Communication in Public Health

  • Description

    In a Changing World, communication is key in keeping the public informed on the evolving field of global health. Speakers from news and article outlets will demonstrate how they practice ethical journalism and create comprehensive, easy to understand, and impactful literature. Work with our speakers on your own public health article and get yourself published in their media.

6. Marginalized Populations

  • Description

    In a Changing World, vulnerable and stigmatized populations are at risk of being left behind. Challenges specific to a diverse set of these peoples will be presented by representatives that work at a grassroots level. Learn how to design a program for marginalized populations and take the connections you make to the next level by implementing that program during a 6-month co-op working with our speaker’s organizations.

7. Designing Global Health

  • Description

    In a Changing World, design interventions are being increasingly recognized as a crucial element for improving quality and accessibility of care. The way we visualize medicine directly impacts our mental, physical, and social well-being. Join us to learn how we can integrate user perspectives and principles of design to re-envision how people interact with care.

8. Maternal and Infant Healthcare

  • Description

    In a changing world, maternal health is a matter of increasing concern both domestically and globally. One of the greatest obstacles in maternal health is awareness. Learn about some of the greatest contemporary challenges in maternal health, and work to assemble and disseminate materials needed to spread life-saving information.

    Submit your work for a poster or oral presentation at Global Health in a Changing World: People, Planet and Technology. The two-day conference will be held at Northeastern University (Boston, MA, USA) from February 7-8, 2020. The world is changing and the field of global health is changing in response. Global Health in a Changing World: People, Planet and Technology aims to unite future health leaders with current world-renowned thought-leaders, researchers, and change makers. Through keynotes, poster presentation sessions, TechTalks, networking sessions, and a series of highly interactive, outcome-driven workshops, Global Health in a Changing World: People, Planet and Technology represents an opportunity to learn and adapt through collaboration and innovation.     Northeastern University welcomed undergraduate students and Bostonians to campus for an inaugural global health conference Friday and Saturday. Any interested parties were welcome to register for free and partake in the discussions around accessible healthcare. Dr. James Cusack, a Massachusetts General Hospital surgical oncologist, gave a keynote presentation at Northeastern University Global Health Initiative Saturday. Cusack touched on the tendency for many Americans to overlook those who cannot afford healthcare and associate inaccessible healthcare with developing countries.
