600 Professions Affected by AB5

A list of professions and business negatively impacted by Assembly Bill 5 (AB5) compiled by Freelancers Against AB5

  • These professions in California have been, or continue to be, negatively affected by Assembly Bill 5 (AB5) since the law went into effect in January 2020. Click to view.

This list comes from members of Freelancers Against AB5. Some professions listed here received exemptions; most did not. Exemptions may or may not be workable depending on caveats in the law. This list reflects any profession or sector that has been impacted in some way by the law. At the end of 2020, a handful of new exemptions were granted to select groups, but many of those who are newly exempted lost work and clients in the interim, never to return. The chilling effect of AB5 itself is enough to negatively affect one’s business even if a sector is fully exempt. The massive fines and penalties for misclassification can be lethal to the hiring business, therefore risk-averse businesses are now avoiding independent contractors in California altogether. The damage incurred by the scorched-earth rollout of AB5 continues to inflict destruction on hundreds of thousands of independent contractors, small businesses, trades, non-profits, industries, and sectors.
